DIY Day: Dressing Up a Shopping Bag

I meant to post this before Christmas, but time got the best of me.  This really is a year round project and I could certainly imagine a Valentine's version!

A friend of mine was hosting a Christmas Party at her new home and had mentioned that she didn't have a lot of Christmas decorations, so in a desire to remedy the situation, I found these glistening bottle brush trees at The Vintage Emporium.  The shopping bags the give out are these simple kraft bags, which I just love for their possibilities.  So, I recycled the bag into a gift bag by decorating with some lace and vintage millinery flowers.  I thought sewing the lace on would be quicker and neater than glue and it turned out to look quite nice.  This is such an easy way to recycle and make your own thoughtful gift wrapping.

I'm pretty new to sewing... do you use a special needle on paper? I've tried a few paper things in the past and it seems like it pulls and eventually rips the paper.

Thanks!

In response to Carly:

I'm not sure if there is a certain needle to use on fabric, I just use a dull needle that I have been using on fabric for a long time. Also, sometimes the thickness of the paper is the paper is the problem, card stock works better.
