Rethinking Baby Gifts

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about what we buy for our children.  Loads of cheap plastic toys line the shelves of Target and other discount stores calling out to our kids with their bright colors and low prices.  I recently bought a set of doll toys for $20 which included a bed, bouncy seat, car seat, carrier, changing pad and high chair.  Ruby has barely played with it and all the pieces are taking up space in her room.  Over the last few years we have accumulated a lot of toys that she barely plays with and have no aesthetic appeal.  I am starting to think about what I buy for other people when they are expecting or have young children. On Saturday, I went to a baby shower for a friend and I had been saving this vintage set of wooden stacking blocks for her baby since I found out she was pregnant.  I love how well it is made and how timeless it is.  I can't imagine Ruby's doll toys will be as good in 50 years.

i was under some delusion that we'd have nothing but quality toys for our son. riiiiiight. it's impossible not to collect all the little plastic things, and even the big things. i WISH it would all stay in his room :)

This is such a great gift idea! I personally hate toys. Yep, that's right! Don't get me wrong-they're good, I guess, but such a pain. I can't count how many times I've stepped on something and broken it. Toys for this generation or just terrible...

Cute. My mother made all my toys for me when I was young (including my dolls). If somebody gave me cheap plastic toys for my birthday she wouls quietly make them disappear before I noticed them. It wasn't until years later that I found them al stashed away in the cupboard. I found it pretty unfair at the time but now that I think about it I not only had amazing handmade toys to play with but also got the toys from my grandmother and great grandmother... can't complain about that!

I used to work at a kids store and we had the best range of wooden toys. The ones that you knew could last for years and be handed down through generations. Those are the toys I want from my kids! But like alex said it can be hard to avoid plastic stuff especially when you have other people buying your kids presents and stuff.
