Salvage Life on the Front Page of Etsy!

I was so excited to learn that Salvage Life was on the front page of Etsy last night.  See the pretty bow skirt in the second photo, that's one of our redesigned vintage skirts!

These skirts have been such a hit at shows, I can barely keep up with the demand.  I take what I would call old lady skirts from the 80's or so, and shorten them.  The extra fabric is then used to make a pretty bow which sits at the side of the waist.  They start out with great colors and prints, but just need a little help with the length and styling...a few simple fixes and they are completely fresh and modern!  The elastic waist ones, can even double as a top ~ see the last photo. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Salvage Life in the Press

I just wanted to share a few recent press mentions of Salvage Life that I was pretty excited about.  First off, we were featured on Kaboodle.com's Buzz Blog in an article on celebrities shopping on Etsy with Taylor Swift wearing the lovely yellow dress from our shop!

Secondly, I am interviewed in a promo video for Patchwork LB on LBPost.com in connection with We Love Long Beach.  I start talking at 48 seconds, so if you want to skip ahead to see me I understand. :)

Taylor Swift wearing Salvage Life!!!

Last night I took my sister to the Taylor Swift concert at the Staples Center via complimentary tickets from her stylist! We had such a good time! Taylor was so cute in person and the yellow dress from our shop looked fantastic on her. We had really great seats, in the fourth row on the side of the stage. But when she came out in the dress, she was sitting on a small stage on the opposite end of the stadium and I was pretty sad. Then my luck turned around and she came back to the main stage for the last song in that dress. It was a wonderful night and absolutely surreal to see her in a dress that just a few weeks ago was for sale in my online shop. Here are a few photos I took. The first one is to show you how far away she was before she moved back to the main stage.

Taylor Swift shops at Salvage Life

Just when you thought you could keep our little vintage shop a secret so no one would know where you got all of your fabulous one of a kind clothes...

If Joseph Cassell, Taylor Swift's amazing stylist found us, your friends will too! Taylor is wearing THIS vintage dress from our shop in her current Fearless concert tour. She wears it while singing White Horse, Tim McGraw, Hey Stephen and Fifteen. I found these photos from fans at her Philadelphia, PA and Charlottesville, VA concerts.

Hurry and head over to the SHOP to snag yourself a one of a kind dress before they are all gone!

Photos from the Harvey's Spring '10 shoot

I just received some more photos from the Harvey's shoot and they look great! I especially love the ones with the words added which Harvey's uses on their website, it really completes the effect. Some of these dresses are still available in the shop.

Photo shoot for Harvey's

I styled a photo shoot today for Harvey's (you know them, they make bags out of seatbelts!) with all of my Salvage Life vintage clothes. The crew was great, the food was good and I think the photos are going to look fab. Here are a few quick pics I took with my blackberry just to give you a sneak peak.

Salvage Life Featured in Alt Noir Magazine

Salvage Life was just featured in Alt Noir Magazine which is a specialty independent online fashion magazine.

Since you can't read it in the picture, I printed the interview questions and answers below. If you would like to download the whole free magazine, click the above link.

Q: How did Salvage Life come to fruition?

A: When I graduated from college I was designing window displays part time and needed to find something to fill the rest of my day, so I started selling things I had picked up from thrift shops and flea markets. It kind of just evolved from there and ever since then I have been waking up in the middle of the night with new ideas for the shop.

Q: Why the name?

A: The name is two fold. The items I sell are all salvaged lives; cast offs from the past that still have relevance today. All the items I get usually need a good cleaning and some need repairs such as hemming, button replacement or an all out redesign. The second meaning implies a lifestyle, as in living a salvage life in which you see the potential in everything in order to waste as little as possible. I have a long way to go on this one, but every bit counts.

Q: Have you always had an affinity for vintage style?

A: I have always enjoyed going to antique stores with my mom, but I would say my interest in vintage clothing is more recent. When I was designing clothes in college I found myself looking at vintage magazines for inspiration and buying findings and fabric from vintage stores. I even found that the contemporary clothes that I liked all had a vintage style to them.

Q: How do you decide what pieces you will utilize for your store?

A: I used to follow all the trends, stocking the store with things I saw in all the magazines and other vintage sites, but when the 80's started coming back I found myself putting things in my shop that I did not like. It was at that point that I realized I wanted everything in the store to be something that I absolutely loved. Now, every time I look at my shop or the rack of clothes in my studio, I get a big smile on my face.

Q: Do you draw on anything in particular for inspiration when making choices for certain pieces?

A: My inspiration comes from stylish bloggers and artists such as Alix from The Cherry Blossom Girl and Emily from The Black Apple. I am also inspired by Zooey Deschanel, old photos, vintage wallpaper, and my stylish friends. When I am lacking creative ideas, I pull out my Anthropologie catalogs, I have a huge stack in my office.

Q: Any plans to expand your store to more than one location in the future?

A: Right now I am just online, but I would love to have a brick and mortar store someday...we'll see.

Q: What is the main goal you wish to achieve through your work?

A: I want to encourage people to reuse the wonderful things we already have rather than purchase newly produced products whenever possible. I also hope to provide affordable clothing so that my customers still have some money left over to live generous lives.

Salvage Life featured on LUXEDELUX

Several years back while Salvage Life was in the works, I had a job designing window displays for a local vintage home furnishings and children's boutique. There I made friends with Tiara, who was the PR Intern. She has since moved on to bigger and better things and just featured SL on her blog. You can see the post HERE.

944 Magazine Party

I got into my car around 6:30 last night to go to a 944 Magazine Party in West Hollywood. Once inside, I noticed a considerable hole in my dashboard...someone had stolen my stereo out of my car, which was in the driveway! Once I got to Sunset, I could not find the party because they had written the wrong address on the invite. I finally got there though and once I did I was happy to see the beautiful display of photos by Cathryn Rose.

Salvage Life's clothing was featured in the photos.
